As previously announced, NLM’s NCBI is modernizing the PubMed Central (PMC) website. The next step is to update the PMC search functionality and user experience. Before we transition to an updated search later this year, we have a beta version available for you to preview and test!
Try PMC Beta Search and share your feedback
We invite you to try out the updated PMC Beta Search by clicking the link under the search bar on the PMC website (Figure 1). You can submit your feedback by using the “Provide Feedback” button (Figure 2). Feedback will be used to improve the PMC Beta Search before it becomes the default in PMC. Visit the PMC Beta Search user guide for general guidance on the updated search.

What’s new?
The update transitions PMC search to the same platform used in PubMed. This change will provide more robust search functionality and more accurate results.
This platform transition supports:
- Easy discovery of articles by searching on a title or basic citation data
- Proximity searching on the full text
- Targeted searches for terms and datasets in data availably statements
PMC Beta Search also includes journal content not previously discoverable through search in PMC. Most notably, this includes non-article content such as mastheads and advertisements from NLM’s Biomedical Journal Digitization Projects. These items will now be returned as individual search results.
Results in PMC Beta Search automatically sort based on the date the article was made publicly accessible in PMC. Other sort options include Publication Date and Relevance. Supporting user preferences in sort behavior is an explicit goal of the beta period, and we welcome your feedback based on your search results.
Other updates and improvements you might notice when testing PMC Beta Search include:
- An updated look and feel of the search results page that is more mobile-friendly and consistent with the rest of the PMC website
- Integration of popular features from PubMed, such as the Results by Year timeline
- A refined set of filters and fields
Please note: PMC Beta Search fully represents the initial set of features that will be launched to the main PMC website later this year.
